The Photo Essay is the Secret to Selling and
Reselling Your Photographs.
It's true.
Just look through
the pages of any magazine and you’ll
find that almost ALL of the articles
therein are supported by photographs.
It’s the natural order of things, right?
In most
cases, the articles are written by one
person while the supporting photographs
are taken by someone else. This causes
big headaches for the editors concerned
because most articles are submitted
without
photographs which means the editor has
to go hunting for them. This takes time
and energy, time and energy that could
be put to better use.
So, can you
imagine how well you would be treated if you were
able to submit a complete package:
text and photographs? Do you
think it would sell? You’d better
believe it. I stumbled across this
concept more than 25 years ago and it’s
been earning big money for me ever
since. No, you don't need to be a
writer, just to be able to write good
captions for your photographs, something
you have to do anyway.
"More than
a year ago, Couloir accepted an article
and it yet has to be published - the
reason - lack of pictures (even though I
tracked down some possible sources for
them)."
Colette van Haaren
It’s quite
true that the big guns of the publishing
industry, such as Conde’ Nast’s Traveler
and Travel & Leisure, do insist on
sending a “qualified” photographer with
their writers, even their freelance
writers. Now that hurts my feelings,
because I was a professional
photographer long before I was a writer,
as often shows up in my writing.
In fact, I
stumbled into writing many years ago as
a way to sell my photographs; how’s that
for a reversal of the concept? I
submitted an article to one of these
lofty mags and it was accepted, but they
insisted on sending a “qualified”
photographer to shoot the supporting
images. Now I found that to be really
funny, but I agreed (I needed the credit
and the money). Imagine my frustration,
then, when I found this so-called
qualified photographer had little or no
idea of how to shoot a salable
photograph – his images were mediocre to
say the least. But you know what, and
this is the point I’m trying to make
here, they ran his images anyway.
This
supports my own experiences and has taught
me
that photographs, even inferior ones,
can and do sell articles. Better yet,
those experiences have also taught me,
over two decades of successful
freelancing, that the finest vehicle to
take you into publication and keep you
there, earning a nice and steady stream
of the green stuff we all love so well,
is the photo essay.
Now, as you
may or may not know (you will if you’ve
ever read any of my input to such sites
as travelwriters.com) I am one of the
few professionals that will tell you –
no, insist – that, YES, you can make a
good living out of travel writing and
photography, but only if you put them
together. I seriously doubt that you
could earn in the high five figures from
either one as a stand-alone. Put them
together in the form of a photo
essay/travel round-up, however, and a
five-figure income is well within the
reach of anyone with a modicum of
photographic skill and the ability to
string a couple of sentences together.
You don’t even need an expensive
camera.
A good photo
essay/travel round-up article will sell
10 to 15 times, perhaps even more. Take
a look at the sales generated by a
recent trip:
One 9-day Trip to England = Five Photo Essays
Over a Three-month Period, All Five Sold Multiple Times -
46 Sales in all for a Total Revenue in Excess of $12,600
-
Photo Essay: Museum Hopping in London - sold 11 times
-
Photo Essay: Touring Shakespeare Country - sold 8 times
-
Photo Essay: England's Castles & Cathedrals - sold 3 times
-
Photo Essay: Exploring the English Cotswolds - sold 9 times
-
Photo Essay (just 2 photos): Old Glory - Sold 15 times
AND THOSE FIVE ESSAYS ARE STILL
SELLING!
Now this
holds true for writers who think
they can’t take salable images, and
also for photographers who think
they can’t write. Yes, you can do
this!
The average
photo essay/travel round-up article
contains some 6 to 10 photographs and a
like number of extended captions that
form the text of the piece. The extended
captions – something most photographers
have to write anyway – might be as short
as 50 words or as long as 400 words, but
they are so easy to write.

This
photo essay ran in the final issue of
PHOTOgraphic magazine. It contains 12
photographs and less than 800 words. The
publishers ran one of the photographs on
the cover of this issue, and another in
the previous issue.
Here’s the
kicker: as I have said before, a good
photo essay will sell over and
over, time and again with little or no
alteration to the text or photographs.
Once the work is done you have a
tangible product that can be marketed to
more than 50,000 publications worldwide.
That’s a fact! Will they all
buy it? Of course not, but a goodly
number of them will.
I never
create an essay I don’t think I can
sell at least 10 times. Think about it.
Produce just one simple essay per month
(that's only 12 per year) and sell it 10
times at an average of only $200 and you
will produce 120 sales annually for an
income of at least $24,000.
Folks, that’s
just one essay every four weeks.
What could be easier? Produce one every
two weeks and… well, you do the math.
Three per month and you have an income
reaching easily into the high five
figures. It’s that easy. Look,
I can knock one of these things out in a
couple of days, and that includes
shooting the images.
I am not
making this stuff up. I’ve been doing it
for more than 25 years. The concept has
put me where I am today: traveling the
world, free of charge, and getting paid
for doing it.
Editors love
these essays. Why? Because: 1, they
don’t have to do any work putting them
together, chasing down photographs and
so on, and: 2, their readers love
them. You
read the comment made by Colette in the
first part of this page. If you didn't,
here it is again:
"More than a year
ago, Couloir accepted an article and it
yet has to be published - the reason -
lack of pictures (even though I tracked
down some possible sources for them)."
Now, here's the rest of what she had to
say:
"This summer, I decided to take Blair's
course and I'm very happy with it.
There's a lot of satisfaction in taking
your own pictures and it's fun. And, if
you're on location, you might as well
take the extra time to shoot photos,
even if it's just to jog your memory
instead of taking notes. I must say, it
does take time and attention (and a lot
of shots) to come up with the perfect
pictures - but the good news is that
Blair shows you how to do that in his
course." Colette van Haaren
The secrets
to selling and reselling these
easy-to-create essays lie in 1: the
ability to take a salable photograph and
2: knowing where and how to market them.
These secrets – the tricks of the trade
– can be quickly and easily learned. The
writing part is the easiest of all, just
the ability to string together a few
well-chosen sentences, and you can
quickly learn how to do that too.

This
photo essay ran in Country Accents
Magazine. It contains 9 photographs and
less than 500 words of text. The fee was
almost $1,800. Without the photographs
there would have been no article.
Imagine if you had
your own private guru to teach you
the secrets of turning your
photographs into a reliable source
of income. Or that you could somehow
find that genie in the bottle that
would explain all those
technicalities and techniques in
words that you can easily
understand. Or imagine if you could
find someone willing and able to
give you that one-on-one, hands-on
learning experience that is so vital
to gaining new skills quickly and
easily, right there in your own
home.
Such gurus are hard
to find, especially those that can
actually produce what they promise.
Most highly skilled professional
photographers either can't teach you
what you need to know, or they don't
want to: the tricks of the trade are
a closely guarded secret.
The real trick is to
find someone who is both willing and
able to teach you the skills you
need, one-on-one and quickly. I am
one such expert. For more than 25
years I have been a professional
photojournalist, and I have discovered the secret formula
that can turn anyone with a little
basic equipment, the desire to take
amazing photographs and turn them
into cash, and a real will to win,
into a professional photojournalist
in just a matter of a few weeks.
Yes, you can cut five years off of
the learning curve. You can develop
the skills that will enable you to
take amazing photographs, and sell
them.
"I had the opportunity to do a workshop with Blair in the Bahamas. Although I had been
taking photos for quite some time, his guidance and expertise helped me to fine tune my skills
and focus my efforts on shooting marketable photos. He has a keen understanding of the
fundamentals of photography.... Apart from his photographic know-how, it was inspiring to
meet someone who actually has made a career out of photography/writing....
Blair is living proof that if you want to do this for a living, it is indeed possible."

one... good, practical
advice that will get you

self-doubt that everyone
experiences when they first
begin trying to sell their
photography to
